We went to the island to celebrate our anniversary on July 3 and I had run across a list of 20 Things to Do in Michigan a month earlier. Even though I've visited the island a few times, I haven't been up to Fort Mackinac in years, and had no idea they let people fire a cannon. I bought it for my husband for his birthday (he is hard to shop for and now I can say that I gave him something no one else ever would).
An extra added bonus is the workout you get walking up the hill to the Fort. And the view is amazing.
I got to help, too. I had to put on a leather thumb sleeve and cover a hole while Elliot cleaned the cannon.
Then we had to wait for the trumpet - which signals the opening of the Fort, I think. I was caught up in the view and wondering how loud it was going to be to really pay attention. They gave Elliot ear plugs, and I just stood back and took pics and video.
The price also includes admission to the Fort and the rest of the historic buildings for the day. It was really interesting. We'd both forgotten the role that the island has played in U.S. wars.
