I'm not gonna lie, my husband and I are not a hip, out-every-night couple. But my husband's friend, Josh, apparently is part of one such couple and when he heard we were going to dinner at SheWolf in Midtown he told us we HAD to stop by Castalia for drinks first.
"It's a fragrance store during the day," Josh said.
We stopped by the basement establishment (Sfumato) on the corner of Second Ave. and Alexandrine St. and were immediately charmed. The bartender, who is a chemistry major at Wayne State, filled us in on the bar's history and helped us pick out drinks. Each drink is accompanied by a scent, which enhances/changes the flavor.
Then we were lucky enough to meet Kevin, one of the owners (with his wife Jane) who gave us even more background and history. We barely made our dinner reservation on time.
We told our daughter about the place and when she came home for Thanksgiving she insisted that I take her. Unfortunately they weren't open when we stopped by, but Kevin was inside filling orders for their incense, which was recently featured in a New York Times gift guide. He saw us walking away disappointed and opened the door. Then he remembered me from my previous one visit, made us amazing drinks (and actually joined us which was SO fun) and continued to fill his orders while we talked food, and drinks, and scents, and books.
Of course I bought a sample pack of the scents, and will probably head back down there to get one for my daughter. And another drink, of course. Because I have to support delightful people doing wonderful things in Detroit.
